Waiting for Morning Light
You can see the places
where the deer
settled down for an evening's rest.
The heat from their bodies left
an impression in the snow
under the fir trees.
They stayed attentive
in their dreamy state,
though a deep sleep
is never theirs to possess.
They patiently waited
for the morning light
and another day
in their struggle to survive.
